Vermicomposting is a natural process whereby earthworms convert waste material with rigid structures into compost. The compost produced in this green process is traditionally and popularly used as a natural fertilizer for enhancing plant growth. The process involves using worms, such as red wigglers and white worms, to decompose a mixture of food waste, bedding materials, and vermicast. The worms' digestive systems break down the waste, and the digested remnants are released as worm castings, also known as "black gold". Worm castings are rich in nutrients and contain compounds that promote growth and limit harmful germs. The nutrient content of the castings depends on the material fed to the worms, which often includes food waste and manure.
