Okra (Bhindi) Variety: Pusa Bhindi-5 –

General Characteristics:

  • A high-yielding improved variety of okra (bhindi)
  • Suitable for cultivation in both spring-summer and rainy (kharif) seasons
  • Widely adapted to North Indian conditions

Plant Features:

  • Plants are medium tall, erect, and well-branched
  • Leaves are deep green and lobed
  • Early flowering habit

Fruit (Pod) Characteristics:

  • Fruits are long, slender, smooth, and dark green
  • Typically 12–15 cm in length
  • Tender, soft texture with good market appeal
  • Low fiber content, making it suitable for consumption and transport

Maturity:

  • First picking starts in about 45–50 days after sowing
  • Early and continuous bearer

Yield Potential:

  • Average yield: 120–150 quintals per hectare under good management practices

Resistance/Tolerance:

  • Moderately tolerant to yellow vein mosaic virus (YVMV), a common okra disease

Special Features:

  • Uniform fruit size and shape
  • Good keeping quality
  • Suitable for both local markets and long-distance transport
