The charoli seed is lentil-sized, is slightly flattened and has an almond-like flavour. Though they can be eaten and used raw they are often toasted or roasted before use, as this intensifies the flavour. They are commonly used in   in India. However, they are also ground into powders for thickening   sauces and flavoring  , and stewed into rich Basundi and kheer.

Chironji might help prevent gastric ulcers by decreasing the gastric secretions as it has anti-secretory property. It is also beneficial in managing diabetes as it reduces blood glucose levels due to its antioxidant properties.

It is useful in wound healing due to its astringent and antiinflammatory properties. It also prevents any skin infections due to its antibacterial properties. As per Ayurveda, applying Chironji seed paste along with rose water or milk on skin helps in managing acne and itching due to its Sita (cooling) properties
