Stem cell therapies are currently being tried in clinical trials for the treatment of liver diseases, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune and metabolic disorders (amyloidosis), chronic inflammatory diseases (lupus), and other advanced cancers. Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs)-derived differentiated cell types may one day be used to treat a variety of human ailments. Examining the immune response that might be launched against them after transplantation is a critical step toward their successful therapeutic deployment. Although embryonic stem cell-based therapeutic strategies cannot currently be used in humans, recent technological advances in cell and molecular biology will have a positive impact on stem cell research and, in the future, should result in the generation of functional tissue grafts for clinical applications.
