Small Indigenous Fish  Species (SIFS) meal is made from small, pelagic Indigenous fish . Fish meals contain crude protein levels above 66%, fat content around 8 to 11%, and ash generally below 12%. It is sometimes produced after sun-drying and grinding, and can have very high levels of ash and relatively low protein levels. Fish meal is also a valuable source of minerals calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, potassium, of vitamins B₁, B₂, B₆ and B₁₂, and of trace elements, notably zinc, iodine, iron, copper, manganese, cobalt, selenium and fluorine. Fishmeal normally contains between 60% and 72% crude protein by weight. From a nutritional standpoint, fishmeal is the preferred animal protein supplement in the diets of farm animals and often the major source of protein in diets for fish and shrimp.
